CMD Pro-Trainer Wins the North American BJJ Championships

2008 North American BJJ Championships Winners PodiumCMD Pro-Trainer Sam Kressin won the North American BJJ Championships this past week end. Sam submitted all of his opponents in the Brown Belt 154-181 lb division and went on to win open weight division as well.

"This tournament was a great opportunity for me to execute both my mental and physical GAME plan of action. Everyone I dealt with at this tournament was friendly and conducted themselves very professionally demonstrating good sportsmanship.

The primary goal was to keep myself as grounded as possible I wanted to bring out my best Jiu-Jitsu in-order to do this I needed to keep all pre-competition stress and nervousness in check while focusing on playing my best Jiu-Jitsu game. I utilized mental imagery and visualization to keep centered. When walking out to the mat I focused on feeling the mat with my feet and toes while I pictured myself grounded to it like a very strong tree. During each match I tried my best to stay in  the present moment as much as possible continuously checking each of my drivers. Regardless of the wins I came out feeling good about my performance.

While there is still much I plan improving on in the future overall this past year I have been far more successful taking my Jiu-Jitsu game into a competition environment and making it work. My final match in the open weight division was the most difficult, grappling an opponent much heavier than myself I became tired more quickly and had to really focus to get through it.

All my training partners, friends and clients at my Martial Arts Life program in Carlsbad, California have been a great help to me as well as my Jiu-Jitsu coach Chris Haueter and the small group of us who train together in Redondo Beach each week. The mental GAME coaching I’ve learned trough the CMD program has also been a great help."
