CMD has continued to grow and evolve since 1998. In a real sense, CMD has come into it’s own in the early part of the 21st century.
While the word ‘style’ is often used in martial arts to define a prescribed method of doing something that often cannot be deviated from. CMD as a ‘style’ is rather a combination of distinctive features of martial art expression, with it’s own unique execution of martial art performance characteristics.
In addition CMD is marked by it’s quality of imagination and individuality expressed in it’s actions as a program of martial arts that is not afraid to push the boundaries of conventional wisdom and challenge what is blindly accepted as truth in the martial arts world today.
As CMD Trainers we are very proud of our program. CMD is one of the few martial art expressions that takes into account how what is coached must impact our clients positively both physical, mentally and emotionally. We also care how that martial expression is expressed further in a positive way into the society at large. All this achieved while still maintaining CMD's functional status as a martial arts program that creates champions in and out of the ring!
More About The 'Style' Of CMD
This is a brief introduction to the 'style' of CMD. No one wants to read volumes online, so we have kept it as short as we possibly can. Take note that CMD is as deep in it's depth as it is expansive in it's breadth. Hopefully what is outlined below gives you a small, but inspiring glimpse into a program that continues to evovle and grow!

The Teaching GAME
Probably the GAME that most clients are initially interested in is the Teaching GAME. The Teaching GAME is the physical expression of CMD and is made up of our unique approach to teaching, drills, techniques and strategy. Below are only a few unique aspects of what makes the CMD a unique expression of martial arts.
Our CHAOS Approach To Teaching CMD-
At the CMD we believe that our clients learn best when they can have a direct experience of what is been taught to them, creating a meaning that only they can embody. Real performance can only take place when what is taught to you becomes integrated into your own personal expression of movement. The bottom line is knowing a hundred techniques means nothing unless you can apply it for yourself, using your own unique movement patterns and attributes. Performance is often left to chance in most martial arts schools. You either get it or you don’t!
The CMD has spent years researching the best ways to improve anyone’s performance. Our Teaching Models are the fruits of that labor. The CHAOS Teaching Model is a unique 5-step process that allows our clients to develop performance from their own unique interpretation and experience of martial movement. Most importantly the CHAOS Model of Teaching allows CMD Trainers to prepare our clients to surf the edge of chaos, where all real martial art expression takes place. Simply put there is no neatly packed martial art sequence of moves or step-by-step strategy that works in the reality of the chaos of the fight. Knowing how to harness the power of chaos and complexity in your martial arts game, means the diffrence between winning or losing. The CMD CHAOS Teaching Model gives you the edge!
CM Defense-
Probably the most widely known aspect of CMD is they way it utilizes defense. It is important to point out here that the 'defense' of CM is only one very small part of what makes up the entire program. We firmly believe that when someone has a sound base in defense they are more able to execute speed and power in technique and make it land. If you cannot survive the storm of incoming attacks how hard, fast or how many techniques you know means little.
Driver Technology-
After years of coaching, sparring and analysis of the stand-up game, Rodney recognized that there where 4 core processes that drove a succesful performance based boxing/kickboxing game. These became known as the 4-Drivers and include Defense, Tight Economical Structure, Active Balance and Adaptive Conditioning. Rodney has coached the 4-Drivers to peak performance in stand-up all accross the world and developed hundreds of specialized drills to enhance each one of the drivers.
The FIGHT Compass-
The FIGHT Compass is our world famous sparring program. We have identified the 4 major styles of fighters as well as their variations. From this knowledge CMD Trainers coach their clients not only how to identify their own specific sparring strength, but how to counter the sparring styles of their opponents. This scientific approach to the 'art' of sparring has allowed us to train world champions and to coach these same principles to Special Force Military Units.
Spheres In Sparring (SiS) Program-
The SiS Program gives our clients both the understanding and the tools to understand the psycho-emotional characteristics of range in a fight. Most people don’t realize that were they are in range to their opponent not only dictates what kind of technique they should be using, but also what kind of emotional and mental game to use. The CMD is grounded firmly in performance psychology. We believe that great martial artists and their ability to spar or defend themselves, is only possible if they both have the physical and mental game to back them up. This is what we coach!
CMD 1, 2, 3 & 4-
CMD has 4 specific training stages or curriculum if you like. Continuosly in development since 1998, they are often taught in sequence and allow our clients to develop a complete martial art game.
CMD 1-
In this program we coach our clients how to work the CMD Rim Shot Range. This teaches them how to play with distance and range. Our clients are also introduced to CM Defense Phase 1, the foundation of our defensive system and all the foundational skills to set them on the road to mastery in the rest of their CMD experience.
CMD 2-
This program is about coaching our clients on how to control space in a fight. Most evident in this range is how to use CM Defense Phase 2, evasive tactics and sprawl and takedown defense.
CMD 3-
CMD 3 is all about controlling the inside. Clients are taught our Straight-Jacket Clinch program that teaches them how to not only control the opponent in the clinch, but also how to strike out of it. Although not our favorite term, this is ‘dirty boxing’ at it’s best.
CMD 4-
CMD 4 is about expressiveness and integration. This is where we teach all our clients the intricacies of the Fight Compass and SiS program; this part of our program is all about sparring and working towards self-preservation proficiency. We are really focused here on using our client’s strengths to develop their game and encouraging their own unique expression of CMD.
